By 4 Months

  1. Lift head and chest while laying on stomach.
  2. Smile when smiled at

By 6 Months

  1. Coo, giggle, and make lots of sounds.

By 9 Months

  1. Act shy, clingy, happy, or sad.
  2. Sit up without much help.
  3. Begin to pull up and stand.
  4. Put toys in container and dump them out.
  5. Make sounds like real words (mama, dada, nana).
  6. Play simple games like “all gone” or “so big”

By 12 Months

  1. Stand alone for a moment.
  2. Crawl on hands and knees.
  3. Walk with one hand held.
  4. Respond to music with body motion.
  5. Eat finger foods without help.
  6. Understand simple commands.
  7. Say their first word.

By 18 Months

  1. Likes to pull, push, and take things apart.
  2. Cling to caretaker in new situations.
  3. Walk without help.
  4. Turn pages in a book.
  5. Says 3+ words you can understand.
  6. Ask specifically for mother or father.

By 2 Years

  1. Use 2- to 3-word sentences.
  2. Treat a doll or stuffed animal as though it were alive.
  3. Walk, run, + climb without help.
  4. Sing songs or say rhymes.
  5. Sometimes get tired, angry, or upset.
  6. Verbalize desires + feelings.
  7. 
Notice others are hurt of upset.

By 3 Years

  1. Calms self when upset.
  2. Knows and can say first name.
  3. Look through a book alone.
  4. Remember what happened yesterday.
  5. Count 2 to 3 objects.
  6. Match circles and squares.

By 4 Years

  1. Hold a pencil and try to write name.
  2. Identify situations that would lead to happiness,
sadness, or anger.
  3. 
Catch a bouncing ball.

Sort by shape or color.
  5. Want explanations of “why” and “how”.
  6. Buckle, button, and lace with help

By 5 years

  1. Dress and undress his or herself (supervision may be needed).
  2. Draw simple figures or objects.
